First 10 questions

1) Which part of the course are you looking forward to most?

I am looking forward to learning about the film industry and how media works in depth.

2) What knowledge and skills do you hope to learn in Media?

I hope to learn teamwork and communication skills, as well as learning the basics of media and how productions are made.

3) What grade are you realistically hoping to achieve in Media (5-9)?

I genuinely want to achieve a grade 9 or hopefully a grade 8 at the least.

4) What was the last TV programme or film you watched?

The last TV series I've watched is Gilmore Girls (2000), and the last film I've watched is Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

5) Why do you think that TV programme or film appealed to an audience? Why would an audience like it?

Gilmore Girls is entertaining and there is always something going on. An audience may also be able to relate to the main character (Rory Gilmore) if they are students in high school, university or teenagers in general, specifically girls. It's also a great series for those interested in drama shows that revolve around family, romance and relationships. Avengers: Infinity War would appeal to an audience especially if they are fans of the Marvel franchise or interested in fun and action-packed movies in general. This film especially has a lot of funny parts as well as some very emotional scenes, it is also a very important movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sets the story for the movie that came after it, which is now one of the biggest films of all time.

6) What technology have you used to access the media in the last 24 hours? (Radio, TV, phone etc.)

I have used my phone and TV within the past 24 hours.

7) What device do you use most to access the media?

I mostly use my phone when accessing the media.

8) Watch this clip from acclaimed BBC drama series Doctor Who:

9) Why was the casting of Jodie Whittaker a significant moment in the history of Doctor Who?

The reason the casting of Jodie Whittaker was a hugely significant moment in the show is because it welcomes a whole new actress into the role, allowing opportunities for a different storyline and a different take on the character. It is also important especially in today's world as she was the first ever woman to play Doctor Who, which breaks certain stereotypes or opinions on how people see female actors in the movie industry, after a character which was supposedly seen as a "male" role for years before was played by a woman.

10) What aspects of this scene do you think an audience might enjoy? List at least three things and explain why the audience would enjoy each aspect.

I think audiences would enjoy the different camera angles and dramatic music as it builds up suspense and gives a whole different effect to the scene. Also, I think many would enjoy the doctor's monologue as Capaldi's delivery of this scene was amazingly well-spoken and emotional.

Extension question: What can you spot in Doctor Who that you will find in most television dramas? (E.g. characters, dramatic music etc.) These are called key conventions - list as many as you can think of.

Certain aspects found in Doctor Who which could also be seen in other TV dramas are the suspenseful music and the tension in the scene. Another one would be the fast camera movements of every angle which adds a more dramatic touch on action or horror type shows. Others could include the amount of action that happens all within a matter of minutes, there is not a dull moment.

Extension question 2: What would a Doctor Who fan ('Whovian') particularly enjoy about this scene?

I think an avid fan of Doctor Who would enjoy this scene as not only is it a goodbye to one adaption of the character, it is also Peter Capaldi's departure from the series which I feel would be an incredibly touching, if not bittersweet feeling. In addition, having a new actress take on the role would be very exciting for what comes next.
